Uses

Misoprostol (Cytotec) Uses

Misoprostol is used to decrease the risk of stomach ulcers in people taking pain medications (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium.

It is also used off-label, as a combined medicine with mifepristone (Mifeprex), to terminate an unwanted early pregnancy (medication abortion) in female patients. Vaginal misoprostol is used off-label for cervical ripening before surgical abortion. It is also used for induction of labor in pregnant women. Rectally administered misoprostol may be used to control postpartum hemorrhage. There may be other uses of misoprostol—your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Misoprostol (Cytotec) Mechanism of Action

Misoprostol protects against gastric ulcers by decreasing gastric acid secretion and protecting the lining of the stomach. It also causes contraction of the uterine smooth muscle.

Misoprostol (Cytotec) Doses

Misoprostol is available as 100 mcg and 200 mg tablets. The typical dose of misoprostol for lowering the risk of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers is 200 mcg four times a day with food.
