How To Use Mupirocin

You should apply a small amount (thin film) of the mupirocin 2 percent ointment to the affected area 3 times a day for 1-2 weeks as directed by your health care professional. Make sure you apply the ointment to clean, dry skin. You can cover the area with a sterile gauze dressing if you want.

Read the prescription label carefully and use mupirocin ointment exactly as instructed by your doctor. Do not use more or less of the ointment or use it more or less frequently than prescribed. 

Do not apply mupirocin to your eyes, nose, mouth or vagina. This medicine should not be applied to broken or burned skin unless your doctor tells you to.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose (forget to apply mupirocin), do it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed application and apply the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra mupirocin ointment to make up for a missed application.

Storage: Store mupirocin at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired mupirocin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw mupirocin in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
