How To Use Naltrexone

Naltrexone comes as a tablet taken by mouth once daily at home. It can also be taken a few times per week under supervision in an addiction treatment center. A healthcare provider can also administer injectable extended release naltrexone every 4 weeks or naltrexone implants every 10-12 weeks.

Read the prescription label carefully and take oral naltrexone exactly as recommended by your doctor. Do not change the naltrexone dose or dosage frequency without your doctor’s approval. This medication will only help you avoid alcohol and drugs as long as you continue taking it. Do not stop taking naltrexone without talking to your doctor.

Naltrexone can help you avoid alcohol and opioid drugs, but it does not prevent alcohol and opioid withdrawal symptoms that occur when you stop using these substances. In fact, naltrexone can cause or worsen withdrawal symptoms. Do not take naltrexone if you are currently using or have recently stopped drinking alcohol or using opioid drugs.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of oral naltrexone, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose. If you miss an appointment for an intramuscular injection of extended release injectable naltrexone or subcutaneous naltrexone implants, call your doctor.

Storage: Store oral naltrexone at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired naltrexone should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw naltrexone in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded naltrexone is through your local waste disposal company or a medicine take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
