How To Use Naproxen

Take naproxen as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Follow the directions on the package or prescription label. 

If you are using non-prescription (OTC) naproxen, do not exceed the maximum dose of three tablets (660 mg) in 24 hours. Stop taking naproxen and call your doctor if your symptoms get worse, you develop new or unusual symptoms, the painful part of your body becomes swollen or red, your pain lasts more than 10 days, or you have a fever for more than 3 days. 

The extended-release tablets are usually taken once daily. The regular tablets, delayed-release tablets, and oral suspension are taken 2-4 times daily, depending on the condition you are treating. 

Take naproxen tablets with a full glass of water. You can also take the tablets with food or milk to prevent nausea. 

Do not split, crush, or chew the delayed-release and extended-release tablets. Shake the naproxen suspension bottle well before use. Use a medication measuring cup or syringe to measure the dose accurately.

Missed dose: If you take naproxen regularly and forget to take a dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store naproxen at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused naproxen. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
