How To Use Nitrofurantoin Monohydrate Macrocrystals (Macrodantin)

Nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals capsules should be taken by mouth 2-4 times a day as prescribed. You will need to take this medication for a minimum of 7 days to treat a urinary tract infection. Taking the medication with food is recommended as it helps to improve drug absorption and makes it easier to tolerate the medicine.

Read the prescription label carefully and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Do not change the dose, dosing frequency, or treatment duration without your doctor’s approval.

Note that nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic, and it does not treat or prevent infections caused by viruses, such as viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Taking a potentially inappropriate medication, such as an antibiotic when it is not needed can increase the risk of getting serious bacterial infections in the future that do not respond to antibiotics.

You should notice an improvement in your symptoms after a few days of taking nitrofurantoin macrocrystals. Continue taking the antibiotic until you finish the prescribed course even if your symptoms are gone. Stopping treatment too soon can cause your infection to come back and be harder to treat in the future. Do not take nitrofurantoin for longer than your doctor prescribes. Taking antibiotics for prolonged or repeated periods can lead to antibiotic resistance in bacteria.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store nitrofurantoin macrocrystal at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals in the trash or flush medications down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company.
