Nitrofurantoin Monohydrate Macrocrystals (Macrodantin) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Take nitrofurantoin with food. This can improve drug absorption and minimize nausea.

  • Avoid taking nitrofurantoin at the same time as antacids that contain magnesium as this can affect how well the antibiotic works.

  • Nitrofurantoin can turn your urine brown or dark yellow. This is harmless and will go away when you stop taking the medicine.

  • Finish all the prescribed nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals even if you no longer have symptoms. Stopping treatment too soon can cause your infection to come back and be harder to treat in the future.

  • Call your doctor without delay if you develop severe diarrhea. This can happen up to 2 months or more after finishing nitrofurantoin treatment.

  • Do not take nitrofurantoin in the last month of pregnancy. Do not give this medicine to a baby under 1 month of age.
