Nitrofurantoin Monohydrate Macrocrystals (Macrodantin) Mechanism of Action

Nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystal kills bacteria by preventing vital processes such as the formation of bacterial ribosomal proteins. It is effective against certain susceptible strains of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Escherichia coli, which cause urinary tract infections.

Nitrofurantoin Monohydrate Macrocrystals (Macrodantin) Doses

Nitrofurantoin macrocrystals are available as a 25 mg capsule, 50 mg capsule, and 100 mg capsule. Nitrofurantoin is also available as a capsule and oral suspension. 

The usual dose of nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals in adults is 50 mg to 100 mg four times a day. A lower dose may be used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections. The dose in children is 5-7 mg/kg of body weight per day given in 4 divided doses. This medication is contraindicated in children younger than 1 month of age.
