How To Use Norethindrone Acetate (Aygestin)
Norethindrone acetate comes in the form of a tablet to take by mouth. The dose and treatment duration depends on the condition being treated.
For endometriosis, your doctor will ask you to take the medicine regularly once a day for 6-9 months. They will start you on a low dose and gradually increase the dose every 2 weeks until you reach the maintenance dose.
For an irregular menstrual cycle or abnormal uterine bleeding, the usual treatment duration is 5-10 days in the second half of the planned menstrual cycle.
Read the prescription label, patient information leaflet, and dosing schedule carefully. Take norethindrone acetate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not change the dose, dosing frequency, or treatment duration without your doctor’s approval.
Norethindrone acetate may help to control your symptoms, but it will not cure your condition. Continue taking the medicine even if your symptoms are well controlled. Do not stop treatment without talking to the prescribing physician.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of norethindrone acetate, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store norethindrone acetate at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused or expired norethindrone acetate should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to it. Do not throw norethindrone acetate in the trash or flush medications down the toilet.
