How should I take nystatin?

Nystatin is available as a tablet and liquid (oral suspension) to be taken by mouth. For treatment of fungal infections of the mouth, you should swish the oral suspension in your mouth for as long as possible and then swallow it (usually four times a day). For treatment of intestinal fungal infections, swallow nystatin oral tablet with water as directed (usually three times a day). 

Take nystatin exactly as directed by your doctor. Read the directions on the medicine label carefully. Do not take more or less of this medication or use it more or less often than prescribed. If you get the same symptoms again, talk to your doctor before taking nystatin again.

If you are taking the oral suspension, shake the bottle before use. Place half a dose in one side of your mouth and swish or hold it there for as long as you can before swallowing. Then repeat on the other side.

Continue taking your medication regularly for as long as prescribed by your doctor. If you skip doses or fail to complete treatment, your fungal infection could come back.

Missed dose:  If you forget to take your nystatin dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose at the regular time. Do not double up on the dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store nystatin in its original container at room temperature, tightly closed and away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Do not refrigerate or freeze nystatin oral suspension. Keep all over-the-counter and prescription drugs out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: The best way to dispose of unused or expired nystatin is through a medication take-back program. It is not advisable to flush medications or give them to your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
