Ofloxacin Uses

Ofloxacin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis and pneumonia), skin infections (cellulitis), sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhea, chlamydia), pelvic inflammatory disease, bladder infections, urinary tract infections, and prostate gland infections.

Note: Ofloxacin is an antibiotic and can only treat infections caused by bacteria. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses and will not treat the common cold, flu, or other viral illnesses.

There may be other uses of ofloxacin, such as to treat bone, joint, stomach, and intestinal infections, Legionnaires disease (a type of lung infection), traveler’s diarrhea in some patients, and for the prevention of plague, which may spread during a bioterror attack. Your doctor or health system pharmacists can give you further ofloxacin drug information.

Ofloxacin Mechanism of Action

Ofloxacin kills bacteria by blocking enzymes that bacteria need to multiply and repair DNA.

Ofloxacin Doses

The usual dose of ofloxacin is 200 mg to 400 mg twice a day for 1 day to 6 weeks, depending on the condition being treated. In addition to ofloxacin for oral administration, an otic solution and eye drops are also available to treat ear and eye infections, respectively.
