- Treatment of schizophrenia
- Acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder
- Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder
When being combined with fluoxetine:
- Treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder (bipolar depression)
- Treatment-resistant depression
Olanzapine is not approved for use in older adults with dementia-related psychosis due to its increased mortality risk.

- Olanzapine is an atypical antidepressant; it works by restoring certain natural substances in the body, such as dopamine and serotonin.By doing so, olanzapine helps schizophrenic and bipolar patients feel less agitated and think more clearly. It can also reduce hallucinations; thus, olanzapine can improve several aspects of everyday life.
- Olanzapine is indicated to treat certain mood conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
What is the dosage of olanzapine (Zypreza, Zypraxa Zydis, Zyprexa Relprevv)?
Like other antipsychotic drugs, olanzapine is usually started at a low dose; then, can be increased based on the patient's clinical response and side effects. Some of olanzapine's side effects are dose-dependent.
Olanzapine dose adjustment is not necessary for renal impairment. For patients with hepatic impairment, olanzapine should be dosed with caution.
The typical dosing of olanzapine for the treatment of schizophrenia:
Adults:
- The typical starting dose: Take 5 mg to 10 mg by mouth once daily
- The maximum daily dose is 20 mg
Children between 13 and 17 years old:
- The typical starting dose: Take 2.5 mg to 5 mg by mouth once daily
- The maximum daily dose is 20 mg
The typical dosing of olanzapine for the treatment of bipolar I disorder:
Adults:
- The typical starting dose if olanzapine is being used alone: Take 10 mg to 15 mg by mouth once daily
- If olanzapine is being used with other medications such as valproate or lithium: Take 10 mg by mouth once daily
Children between 13 and 17 years old:
- The typical starting dose: Take 2.5 mg to 5 mg by mouth once daily (regardless of olanzapine is being used alone or in combination with other medications such as valproate and lithium)
- The maximum daily dose is 20 mg
The typical dosing of olanzapine for the treatment of depressive episodes of bipolar I disorder:
Adults:
- The typical starting dose: Take 5 mg by mouth once daily in the evening with 20 mg of fluoxetine
- The maximum daily dose is 18 mg of olanzapine and 75 mg of fluoxetine
Children between 10 and 17 years old:
- The typical starting dose: Take 2.5 mg by mouth once daily in the evening with 20 mg of fluoxetine
- The maximum daily dose is 12 mg of olanzapine and 50 mg of fluoxetine
