How To Use Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Lovaza)

Omega-3 fatty acids come in the form of a liquid-filled capsule to take by mouth once or twice a day as prescribed, with or without food. Swallow the capsules whole. Do not break, crush, or chew them.

Read the prescription label carefully and take your medicine exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without talking to your doctor.

It is important to be on a diet that is low in saturated fats before starting omega-3 fatty acids and to continue on this diet during treatment. You should make every attempt to lower serum triglyceride levels with lifestyle measures before starting treatment with prescription omega-3 fatty acids. Your doctor may refer you to an expert in clinical nutrition to advise you on the food sources that can provide healthy fats and essential nutrients.

Your healthcare provider will order laboratory tests to measure triglyceride levels before starting treatment with Lovaza to make sure they are consistently high. They will also treat and control medical problems, such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) and diabetes mellitus, which can make hypertriglyceridemia worse. In addition, your provider may discontinue or switch medications that can worsen hypertriglyceridemia, such as beta blockers, estrogens, and thiazides.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of omega-3 fatty acids, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store omega-3 fatty acids at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused omega-3 fatty acids should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw omega-3 fatty acids in the trash or flush them down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded omega-3 fatty acids is through a drug take-back program.
