How To Use Oxybutynin Chloride ER (DITROPAN XL)
Oxybutynin chloride ER comes in the form of an extended release tablet to be taken by mouth with water once a day. You should take this medicine with a full glass of water or some other liquid. Do not crush, chew, or split the extended release tablets. Take your medicine at around the same time every day. You can take oxybutynin chloride ER with or without food.
Read the prescription label and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions carefully. Use oxybutynin chloride ER exactly as directed. Do not take a higher or lower dose of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than your doctor has prescribed.
Your doctor may start you on a low dose of oxybutynin chloride ER and increase your dose gradually. You will likely notice some improvement in your symptoms in the first two weeks of taking this medicine. However, it can take 6-8 weeks to get the full benefits. Tell your doctor if you don’t notice any difference in your symptoms of overactive bladder 8 weeks after starting oxybutynin chloride ER.
This medicine will control your symptoms but will not cure your condition. Continue taking the medication regularly even if your symptoms are better. Do not stop taking the medication without your doctor’s approval. Your doctor may suggest periodic trials off the drug to see if you still need it.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of oxybutynin chloride ER, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store oxybutynin chloride ER at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused oxybutynin chloride ER should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw the medicine in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
