Oxybutynin Chloride ER (DITROPAN XL) Pros and Cons

  • You only need to take the oxybutynin chloride ER tablet (extended release) once a day. 
  • This medication is available in a low-cost generic version.
  • It can be given to children as young as 6 years old.

  • Side effects like dry mouth and constipation are common.
  • Because of its anticholinergic effects, oxybutynin can also cause serious side effects like prolonged constipation and urinary retention. 
  • You cannot crush, split, or chew the tablet (extended release).
  • It may not be the best choice for older adults (age 65 plus).
