How To Use Oxycodone-Acetaminophen

Oxycodone and acetaminophen come in the form of a combined tablet to take by mouth every 6 hours as needed to relieve pain. You should limit dosages to the smallest dose for the shortest duration.

Read the prescription label carefully and take the medicine exactly as prescribed. If your pain is not controlled on the prescribed dose of oxycodone and acetaminophen, tell your doctor. Do not increase the dose, dosage frequency, or duration of treatment without your doctor’s approval.

Do not substitute the extended-release oxycodone tablets for Percocet. If you want to switch to some other opioid pain medication, your doctor will tell you how to do it.

You may find that over time, oxycodone and acetaminophen do not work as well as they did previously to control your pain. This decreased efficacy is due to opioid tolerance, which develops when you take oxycodone regularly. Do not increase the dose without consulting your healthcare provider.

Do not stop taking oxycodone and acetaminophen suddenly, as this can lead to unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Your healthcare provider will tell you how to gradually lower the dose.

Missed dose: Oxycodone and acetaminophen is taken as needed to relieve pain. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store oxycodone and acetaminophen at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused oxycodone and acetaminophen should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw leftover medication in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded oxycodone and acetaminophen is through a medicine take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
