What side effects should I be expecting from taking pantoprazole?
Signs of pantoprazole allergy: difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).
Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following signs:
- Signs of new or worsening lupus — joint pain, skin rash also known as butterfly rash on your face or arms that worsens in sunlight.
- Signs of low magnesium —cough, choking feeling, fast or irregular heartbeat, tremors, jerking muscle movements, muscle cramps, muscle spasms in your hand or feet.
- Signs of kidney problems— blood in urine, decreased urination, weight gain (swelling), loss of appetite, fever.
- Severe stomach pain
- Diarrhea that is bloody or extremely watery
- Seizures
- Sudden bone pain and pain when moving your wrist, back, or hip
- A 24-month study has shown that long-term use of pantoprazole can cause rare stomach tumors and benign polyps of the gastric fundus (the largest, middle portion of the stomach). Talk to your doctor about this risk.
- Generally, daily use of pantoprazole for longer than three years can cause cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B-12) malabsorption, leading to B-12 deficiency. Your doctor will order blood tests to ensure that your blood magnesium is within normal range.
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas
- Joint pain
- Fever, rash
- Cold symptoms (in children)

Overdosage in people who take pantoprazole at very high doses (>240 mg) is uncommon. Pantoprazole is not removed by hemodialysis. In case of overdosage, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pantoprazole overdose symptoms include tremors, being less active than usual, impaired coordination, hunched sitting.
