How To Use PEG 3350 Electrolytes (Golytely)
Polyethylene glycol 3350 electrolytes comes as a powder to be mixed with water. Read the FDA-approved patient labeling and package instructions carefully and take the medication as directed. Do not change the dose or dosage frequency without your doctor’s approval.
You should not consume the PEG 3350 ES powder without mixing it with water. Do not mix it with any liquid other than water. Do not add the powder to liquids thickened with starch-based thickeners. The oral solution is more palatable when chilled.
Stop eating solid food 2 hours before starting this medication. For best results, do not eat solid food for 3-4 hours before starting the bowel preparation with polyethylene glycol 3350 electrolytes. You can eat a light breakfast before starting bowel cleansing. Your doctor may ask you to begin taking GoLYTELY early in the evening on the day before your colonoscopy or on the morning of your colonoscopy. They may ask you to take it all at one time or in two doses.
You should drink clear liquids during and after the bowel preparation, up to 2 hours before your scheduled colonoscopy. Examples of clear liquids are water, clear broths, light-colored fruit juices that don’t contain pulp, coffee, and tea without milk, popsicles, flavored gelatin, and soft drinks. Avoid drinking liquids that are red or purple in color, as they can interfere with interpreting colonoscopy findings.
You should also not administer oral medications 1 hour before or while taking GoLYTELY. Also, do not take any other laxatives while taking polyethylene glycol 3350 electrolytes.
If you develop severe discomfort, for example, abdominal cramps or abdominal bloating, slow down or temporarily discontinue GoLYTELY until your symptoms abate.
Missed dose: You should finish your bowel preparation by consuming all of the PEG 3350 electrolytes oral solution. If bloating or abdominal pain occurs, slow down or discontinue the medication until your symptoms are better.
Storage: Store PEG 3350 electrolytes powder at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Store the mixed oral solution in the refrigerator. Do not freeze it. Read the package instructions for the number of hours you can store the mixed solution. You should use GoLYTELY, Colyte, Nulytely, and Trilyte within 48 hours, Moviprep within 24 hours, and Plenvu within 6 hours.
Unused medicine: Unused PEG 3350 electrolytes should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw PEG 3350 electrolytes in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded PEG 3350 electrolytes is through a drug take-back program.
