Penicillin V Potassium Side Effects

Possible side effects of penicillin V potassium are listed below. Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away in a few days.

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Black, hairy tongue

Rarely, orally administered penicillin V potassium can cause serious side effects, including occasionally fatal hypersensitivity. Call your doctor for medical advice or get emergency medical help if an allergic reaction occurs. Seek immediate emergency treatment if you develop:

  • Skin rash, hives, itching
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Wheezing
  • Hoarseness
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
  • Recurrent fever, sore throat, chills, swollen glands, or other signs of infection
  • Joint pain
  • Severe watery and bloody stools with or without fever and severe stomach pain (this can occur up to 2 months or more after antibiotic treatment)
