Uses

Permethrin (Elimite)Uses

Topical permethrin is used for the treatment of scabies (a parasitic infestation in which tiny mites burrow into the skin, causing a rash and intense itching). It is also used to treat lice (tiny insects that attach themselves to the scalp and feed on human blood).

There may be other uses of permethrin—your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Permethrin (Elimite) Mechanism of Action

Permethrin works by killing mites and lice.

Permethrin (Elimite) Doses

Elimite (permethrin 5% cream) should be thoroughly massaged into the skin from the neck down to the toes in adults. A 30-gram tube of permethrin is usually sufficient for most adults. In elderly and younger patients, scabies mites can also infest the hairline, forehead, temple, and neck, and these areas should be treated. The cream should be left in place for 8 to 14 hours and washed off by bathing or showering. One application usually cures scabies, but a second treatment is sometimes necessary if scabies mites are noted 14 days (2 weeks) after the first application of permethrin.

Permethrin is also available over-the-counter for treatment of head lice (brand name Nix). The lotion, rinse, or shampoo should be applied to clean, damp hair and left in place for 10 minutes, after which it should be rinsed out. A second treatment may be necessary if lice are seen 7 or more days after the first treatment.
