Phenazopyridine Side Effects

Some of the common side effects of phenazopyridine are listed below. Tell your doctor if these adverse effects are severe or do not go away after a few days.

  • Red, orange, or brown urine color (this is harmless and will disappear in a few days)
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach


Some of the side effects of phenazopyridine can be more serious. Contact your doctor right away or seek emergency medical help if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Fever
  • Confusion
  • Skin rash
  • Bluish purple skin discoloration
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling of the arms, hands, legs, ankles, or feet
  • Sudden decrease in the amount of urine (little or no urinating)
