How To Use Pimecrolimus (Elidel)
Apply topical pimecrolimus to areas of skin where atopic dermatitis (eczema) is present. Use the medicine twice daily for up to 6 weeks or as long as your doctor recommends.
Read the prescription label carefully and use pimecrolimus exactly as advised. Do not increase the amount of medicine used or the frequency of use without your doctor’s approval.
Pimecrolimus is for external use on the skin only. Avoid getting the medicine in your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or vagina. If pimecrolimus gets in your eyes, wash them thoroughly with water. If eye irritation persists, seek medical care immediately. Call your doctor if you swallow the medicine.
Here are the steps to apply Elidel (pimecrolimus cream):
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
- Make sure the area to be treated is clean and dry.
- Apply a thin layer of pimecrolimus cream and massage it gently.
- Wash off any residual medicine on your hands with soap and water.
Pimecrolimus use has been linked to an increased risk of skin cancer and lymphoma. To lower your risk:
- Do not use topical pimecrolimus on unaffected areas of skin.
- Use the smallest amount of cream to cover the affected area.
- Stop using the medicine as soon as your symptoms are gone.
- You can cover the treated area with clothing but do not place an occlusive dressing, bandage, or wrap on the area.
- Tell your doctor if your eczema symptoms do not improve after 6 weeks of using pimecrolimus or come back after you stop using it.
- Do not use pimecrolimus in children younger than 2 years of age.
- Wear protective clothing and sunscreen to protect your skin from sunlight. Avoid exposure to artificial light (tanning beds and sun lamps).
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of pimecrolimus, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store pimecrolimus at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused and expired pimecrolimus should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to it. Do not throw pimecrolimus in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded pimecrolimus is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
