How To Use Potassium Chloride

This medication comes in the form of a potassium chloride capsule, tablet, oral solution, or powder to take by mouth. It is usually taken in divided doses throughout the day. Take potassium chloride with meals. Do not take it on an empty stomach because the medicine upsets the stomach.

Read the prescription label carefully and take potassium chloride exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take a higher or lower dose or take it more or less often than advised. High doses can lead to severe complications.

Swallow the extended-release tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or suck the potassium chloride tablet.

If you have difficulty swallowing pills, you can sprinkle the contents of the capsule on some cold, soft food like applesauce. Consume the mixture immediately and drink some water afterward to ensure you swallow all of the medicine.

If you are using liquid medicine, use the dosing syringe provided to measure the dose accurately.

Your doctor may adjust your dose based on your lab values. If you have very low levels of potassium (below 2.5 mEq/L), you may need intravenous potassium chloride injection instead of potassium chloride oral.

Missed dose: If you forget a dose of potassium chloride, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store potassium chloride at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused potassium chloride should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw potassium chloride in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded potassium chloride is through a drug take-back program.
