How To Use Potassium Citrate ER (Urocit-K)
Potassium citrate ER should be taken by mouth 2-3 times a day as prescribed within 30 minutes of a meal or snack. Swallow the tablets whole. Never cut, crush, chew, or suck extended-release capsules. Also, do not split extended-release tablets.
Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet carefully and take your medication regularly as your doctor directs. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your doctor’s approval.
Treatment with potassium citrate tablet extended release should be accompanied by a low-salt diet and high fluid intake, such that your urine volume is at least 2 liters per day.
Tell your doctor if you have trouble swallowing the Urocit-K tablets or if they stick in your throat. Also, tell your doctor without delay if you notice coffee grounds vomit, black, tarry stools, or other signs of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Keep all your medical and laboratory appointments during treatment with potassium citrate ER. Your doctor will order 24-hour urinary citrate and/or urinary pH measurements to assess if the initial dosage is adequate and make adjustments as necessary. They will monitor serum electrolytes (potassium, sodium, chloride, and carbon dioxide), serum creatinine, and a complete blood count every 4 months or more frequently if you have heart disease, kidney disease, or acidosis. They will repeat these laboratory tests every 4 months to closely monitor potassium levels. Your healthcare provider will also perform electrocardiograms from time to time. Treatment with Urocit-K may need to be discontinued if you develop hyperkalemia (high blood potassium levels), an increase in serum creatinine, or a significant drop in your hemoglobin and hematocrit.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of potassium citrate ER, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store potassium citrate ER at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused potassium citrate ER should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw potassium citrate ER in the trash or flush medications down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded potassium citrate ER is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
