How should I take Prilosec (omeprazole)?

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), including Prilosec, should be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before a meal. You should take Prilosec orally (by mouth) with water. Do not crush or chew the delayed-release tablets and capsules, and do not mix them in food. If you are taking the granules for oral suspension, mix the granules in water before taking them. Drink the mixture within 30 minutes. If some granules are stuck to the glass or container, add more water and immediately drink the medicine. 

Prilosec does not work as well when ingested on-demand because this medicine needs to be taken over a period of time to be effective. It can take 1-4 days for you to feel the benefits of Prilosec.

Follow the directions on your prescription label or OTC Prilosec package for the dosage and frequency. Take your Prilosec regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more Prilosec or take it more frequently than prescribed or indicated on the Prilosec OTC package. Do not stop taking prescription Prilosec without talking to your doctor first. 

Prilosec may be given to children as young as one year of age. Talk to your child’s health care provider for the appropriate Prilosec dose for your child.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of Prilosec, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next Prilosec dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not double up on Prilosec doses to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Prilosec at room temperature (between 15-30 C or 59-86 F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep Prilosec out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused Prilosec should be disposed of in a way that children, pets, and others cannot get to it. Do not flush unneeded or expired Prilosec down the toilet.
