Prilosec (omeprazole) tips from pharmacists

  • You should only use Prilosec OTC for frequent heartburn (more than twice a week). It takes 1-4 days for Prilosec to kick in fully. Do not use OTC Prilosec for more than 14 days. If your symptoms do not improve, speak to your doctor.

  • For faster relief of heartburn, Prilosec can be combined with an antacid such as Tums.

  • Prilosec tablets and capsules are delayed-release formulations (this ensures the medicine is released in the intestines and is not destroyed by the stomach acid). Never crush or chew Prilosec tablets. Instead, always take the tablets whole with a glass of water on an empty stomach. If you use Prilosec granules, you should mix the powder in water or applesauce and swallow it immediately without chewing.

  • Prilosec can interact with other medications, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, herbal products, and dietary supplements. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking or plan to take to avoid Prilosec interactions.
