How To Use Primidone (Mysoline)

Take primidone tablets by mouth 3-4 times a day as prescribed. Read the prescription label and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions carefully. Your doctor will start you on a low dose of primidone and adjust the dose no more frequently than every 3 days. 

If you are taking another anticonvulsant, your doctor may ask you to slowly decrease the dose of that medicine over a period of at least 2 weeks while you increase your primidone dose. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency of any of your epilepsy medicines unless your doctor tells you.

Primidone can help to control your seizures but will not cure the underlying condition. It can take several weeks for you to get the full benefit of this medicine. Do not discontinue treatment with primidone suddenly without talking to your doctor, even if your seizures are well controlled. Stopping primidone suddenly can lead to worsening seizure control. Your doctor will tell you how to gradually reduce the dose of primidone and switch to a different seizure medicine if needed. Tell your doctor if you develop any unusual changes in mood or behavior while on primidone.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of primidone, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take multiple doses (double or extra doses) to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store primidone at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in the original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused primidone should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw primidone in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
