Primidone (Mysoline) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Your doctor will start you on a low dose of primidone and gradually increase the dose no more frequently than once every 3 days. Follow the dosing instructions carefully. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your provider’s approval.

  • You can take primidone with or without food. If it causes an upset stomach, taking it with food might help.

  • Primidone can cause dizziness, vision changes, and balance problems. Be careful when driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while on primidone. Alcohol can make primidone side effects like dizziness and coordination problems worse.

  • Primidone may help to control seizures but does not cure epilepsy. Continue taking the medicine even if your seizures are under control. Do not suddenly stop taking primidone - this can cause worsening seizures and status epilepticus.
