Pharmacist Tips

Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) tips from pharmacists

  • Pristiq is an extended-release medication - you should swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not cut, chew, or break the pill.

  • You should take Pristiq with or without food, around the same time every day. However, if you experience nausea, you should take Pristiq with food.

  • Like other antidepressants, Pristiq can worsen your depression, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. Let your doctor know if you experience worsening symptoms of depression or if you notice unusual mood or behavior changes.

  • Do not drive or operate hazardous machinery until you know how your body reacts to Pristiq, as it can cause drowsiness.

  • Similar to other antidepressants, it can take up to 8 weeks for you to see the full effects of Pristiq. You will likely experience the side effects before you experience improvement in the symptoms of your depression.

  • Sudden discontinuation of Pristiq can cause severe withdrawal symptoms. A gradual dose reduction must take place. Talk to your healthcare provider if you want to discontinue Pristiq.

  • National Pregnancy Registry for Psychiatric Medications is a registry that monitors the safety of certain medications during pregnancy. If you are pregnant and taking Pristiq, it is highly recommended that you enroll in this registry.
