Side Effects


What are Provigil (modafinil) side effects?

Some of the common side effects of Provigil are listed below. Call your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away.

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Nervousness
  • Anxiety
  • Runny nose
  • Back pain
  • Dizziness
  • Indigestion
  • Problems with falling asleep or staying asleep

Other possible Provigil side effects are more serious. Contact your doctor immediately or get emergency medical care if you experience the following side effects:

  • Rash, blisters, sores, peeling skin, hives, itching
  • Mouth sores
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling of the face, tongue, mouth, lips, hands, or feet
  • Chest pain
  • Irregular, fast, or pounding heartbeat
  • Over-excitement or frenzied mood
  • Hallucinations
  • Anxiety, depression
  • Thoughts about harming or killing yourself

The above list may not include all the potential side effects of Provigil. Talk to your doctor about severe side effects or symptoms that do not improve over time. You can also report unusual Provigil side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Provigil Overdose: Get emergency medical help if you overdose on this medication. Symptoms of an overdose can include agitation, restlessness, confusion, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, hallucinations, fast or irregular heartbeat, uncontrolled shaking, nausea, and diarrhea. If someone with a suspected overdose has collapsed, cannot breathe, or cannot be awakened, call 911 immediately.
