How To Use Ramipril (Altace)

Ramipril comes in the form of capsules to take by mouth once or twice a day as prescribed, either with or without food. You can swallow the capsule whole or open it and mix the contents with 4 oz of applesauce, water, or apple juice. The mixture can be pre-prepared and stored for up to 24 hours at room temperature and 48 hours in the refrigerator. Try to take your medicine at around the same time every day. This will help you remember to take it.

Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet carefully. Take the medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes. Do not change the dose or dosage frequency without your doctor’s approval.

Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose of ramipril and gradually increase the dose based on your response. This medicine can help to treat high blood pressure and heart failure but will not cure these conditions. Do not stop taking ramipril without talking to your healthcare provider, even if you are symptom-free. High blood pressure may not cause any symptoms but can increase your risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of ramipril, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store ramipril at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused ramipril should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to it. Do not throw ramipril in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
