Risedronate Sodium (Actonel) Tips from Pharmacists
If you are taking risedronate sodium once a week, two days a month, or once a month, mark the date on your calendar or set a reminder in your phone so you can remember to take the medicine on the same day every week or month.
Swallow the medicine with a full glass of plain water first thing in the morning before your first food or drink. Stand or sit upright and do not eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after taking the medicine.
Never take risedronate at night or before getting out of bed. Lying down after taking risedronate sodium can cause irritation and damage to your esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth and stomach).
Continue taking risedronate sodium even if you feel well. This drug can increase bone mass but will not cure the underlying condition.
Brush your teeth twice a day and keep your mouth clean while on risedronate sodium. Tell your dentist you are on risedronate sodium before any dental treatment.
Call your doctor if you develop adverse effects such as new or worsening heartburn, chest pain, jaw pain, bone pain, muscle pain, severe joint pain, esophagus problems, or other severe pain while on this drug.
