Side Effects


Risedronate Sodium (Actonel) Side Effects

Possible side effects of risedronate sodium are listed below. Call your doctor for medical advice if these side effects are severe or persistent.

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Gas
  • Burping
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Back pain
  • Leg cramps
  • Urinary frequency or urgency
  • Pain with urination

Risedronate sodium can also cause more serious side effects. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if you develop the following symptoms:

  • Pain with swallowing or difficulty swallowing
  • Heartburn (new or worsening)
  • Chest pain
  • Skin rash, hives, itching, blistering (allergic reaction)
  • Swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, throat, hands, lower legs, ankles, or feet
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet or around the mouth
  • Muscle spasms, cramps, or twitching
  • Redness, swelling, and pain in the eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Loose teeth
  • Pain or swelling in the gums
  • Heaviness or numbness in the jaw
  • Slow or poor healing in the jaw
  • Unusual pain, such as a dull or aching pain in the groin, thighs, or hips

The above list may not include all the potential side effects of risedronate sodium. Contact your healthcare provider if your side effects are unusual or severe or they do not get better over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Risedronate sodium (Actonel) Overdose: In case of an overdose of risedronate sodium, call your doctor immediately. You can also call your local poison control center, provincial poison control center, or the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 or emergency services if a person has collapsed, stopped breathing, had a seizure, or is not responding. Symptoms of an overdose of risedronate sodium may include irregular heartbeats, muscle cramps or twitches, numbness and tingling, or seizures.
