How To Use Scopolamine

Scopolamine comes in the form of a transdermal patch. The effects occur 4 hours after you apply a patch. Each patch can be worn for 3 days. You should wear only one patch at a time. If you need to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness for more than 3 days, remove the old patch before applying a new one. To prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting, apply the patch the evening before surgery and remove it 24 hours after surgery.

Apply the transdermal patch on clean, dry, hairless skin behind the ear. Avoid areas with broken skin. Do not cut the transdermal patch. Do not touch the adhesive surface of the patch. Never apply more than one patch at the same time.

Avoid swimming as much as possible as water can cause the patch to fall off. If a scopolamine patch falls off, throw it away and apply a new patch behind the other ear.

After use, fold the patch with the adhesive (sticky) side inside to prevent accidental contact. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly every time you handle a scopolamine patch.

Read the prescription label carefully. Use the scopolamine transdermal patch exactly as directed by your doctor. If you have used scopolamine patches for several days or longer, you may experience withdrawal symptoms like loss of balance, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, sweating, muscle weakness, confusion, low blood pressure, and slow heart rate. Contact your healthcare provider if these withdrawal symptoms are severe.

Missed dose: Scopolamine patch is used as needed. It must be applied at least 4 hours in advance to reach therapeutic plasma concentrations and provide the desired antiemetic effects. Likewise, the transdermal patch needs to be applied the evening before surgery. In case of a missed dose (if you forget to apply the transdermal patch), do it as soon as you remember. However, never apply two patches at the same time because this can increase the risk of dose-dependent adverse effects.

Storage: Store scopolamine patches at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused scopolamine patches should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw scopolamine patches in the trash or flush them down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded scopolamine is through a drug take-back program.
