How To Use Sennosides (Senokot)
Sennosides is available in the form of a tablet and liquid solution to take by mouth once or twice a day. This medication typically begins working in six to twelve hours. Therefore, taking sennosides at bedtime usually produces a bowel movement the next morning.
Read the package instructions carefully and take sennosides as directed. Do not take sennosides for more than one week without talking to your healthcare provider. Long-term use of this product can make your bowels dependent on laxatives. If you do not have a bowel movement after taking sennosides, stop taking the medicine and call your doctor.
Missed dose: Sennosides is usually taken as needed. If you are taking it regularly and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store sennosides at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused sennosides should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw sennosides in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded sennosides is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
