Sennosides is made from the senna plant and is used to treat constipation. It is also used to cleanse and empty the bowels before surgery.
There may be other uses of sennosides—your health professional or pharmacist can give you further drug information.
Sennosides (Senokot) Mechanism of Action
Sennosides do not have pharmacological activities themselves. They are metabolized to an active metabolite by the intestinal microflora (gut bacteria). The laxative effect of sennosides occurs through increased contractions of the intestinal muscles, which causes a bowel movement.
