Sodium Fluoride (Prevident) Risks, Warnings, and Complications

Sodium fluoride can cause or worsen serious health problems in some people. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other ways to prevent dental caries if you are at an increased risk of complications from this medication.

  • SODIUM FLUORIDE TOXICITY: Dental fluorosis is a condition in which there are changes in the appearance of tooth enamel. It can occur due to excessively high exposure when children regularly consume fluoride during the teeth-forming years (age 8 and younger). Daily ingestion of sodium fluoride for prolonged periods by children under 6 years of age can result in dental fluorosis, especially if the fluoride levels in drinking water are above 0.6 parts per million (ppm) since younger children frequently cannot brush their teeth without significant swallowing. Supervise younger children during the brushing process to prevent unnecessary swallowing of sodium fluoride-containing toothpaste. Keep sodium fluoride products out of reach of infants and children.

Precautions Before Starting Sodium Fluoride (Prevident)

Tell your health care provider if you are allergic to sodium fluoride, any of the active or inactive ingredients in sodium fluoride products, or any other medicines. Your pharmacy can give you a list of ingredients.

Give your doctor or pharmacist a complete list of your medications, including prescription drugs, non-prescription (OTC) medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements. This will help avoid possible drug interactions between sodium fluoride and your other medications.

Give your doctor a complete medical history. Sodium fluoride may not be safe for people with certain medical conditions.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, could be pregnant, are planning a pregnancy soon, or are breast-feeding.

Precautions During Use of Sodium Fluoride (Prevident)

Keep all your dental appointments during treatment with sodium fluoride.

Do not take oral sodium fluoride at the same time as calcium, iron, or magnesium supplements without checking with your doctor. Avoid eating dairy products within 1 hour of your oral sodium fluoride dose.

Tell all your healthcare providers you are on sodium fluoride before any procedure, especially dental procedures.

Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking oral sodium fluoride or using prescription sodium fluoride products.

Sodium Fluoride (Prevident) Drug Interactions

Certain other drugs can affect how sodium fluoride works. Possible interactions between sodium fluoride and other medicines can increase the risk of severe adverse effects.

Give your doctor or pharmacist a list of all the medicines you take, including prescription drugs, OTC (non-prescription) drugs, dietary supplements, and herbal products. Also, tell your healthcare professionals if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs because some of these substances can cause serious health complications when used with prescription and nonprescription medications.
