Spironolactone Side Effects

Possible side effects of spironolactone are listed below. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects if they are severe or if they do not go away in a few days.

  •  Stomach pain or cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Enlarged or painful breasts
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Vaginal bleeding in postmenopausal women
  • Erectile dysfunction (problems with achieving or maintaining an erection)
  • Increased hair growth on parts of the body
  • Deepening of the voice
  • Tiredness
  • Drowsiness
  • Restlessness

Some of the adverse reactions of spironolactone are more serious. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if you experience:

  •  Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Changes in heartbeat
  • Muscle pain, cramps, or weakness
  • Inability to move the arms or legs
  • Pain, burning, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Lack of energy
  • Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, thirst, unsteadiness, dizziness, headache)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Right upper abdominal pain
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Skin rash, hives, itching (signs of an allergic reaction)
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Blood in vomit
  • Blood in stools
  • Decreased urination
  • Confusion
  • Fainting

Spironolactone Overdose: In case of an overdose of spironolactone, call your doctor immediately. You can also call the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, dizziness, irregular or slow heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tingling in the arms and legs, heaviness in the legs, muscle weakness, loss of muscle tone, and confusion.
