How should I take Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone)?
Take Suboxone as directed by your physician and/or pharmacist. Each Suboxone sublingual film comes in a sealed child-resistant foil pouch. Do not open the foil pouch until you are ready to use it. To use the sublingual film, rinse your mouth with water and, using a dry finger, place the film under your tongue. Hold the film in place for 5 seconds. If you are using two Suboxone films, place each film on either side of your mouth, under your tongue. Do not put the films on top of each other or close to one another. Do not use more than two Suboxone films at a time. Do not tear, cut, chew, or swallow the films. Wait until the film dissolves completely before talking or eating or drinking anything. Do not touch or move the film while it dissolves.
Follow your doctor’s medical advice. Read the directions on your prescription label carefully for the Suboxone dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more Suboxone or take it more frequently than prescribed. Do not stop Suboxone without talking to your doctor first.
Do not switch from one buprenorphine and naloxone product to another, for example, from the sublingual film to the sublingual tablet or buccal film, without consulting your doctor (the dose may need to be changed). Each time you pick up your Suboxone prescription, make sure you have received the correct prescribed product.
Suboxone can be prescribed to adolescents 16 years of age and older. The safety and efficacy of Suboxone in children have not been established.
Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Suboxone, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take two Suboxone doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store Suboxone at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light (not in the bathroom) in a tightly closed container. Keep Suboxone in a secure place out of reach of children. Accidental or deliberate use of Suboxone by a child can lead to severe and potentially fatal respiratory depression. If a child accidentally uses Suboxone, it is a medical emergency and can result in death. If this occurs, get emergency medical help right away.
Unused medicine: Throw away any unused Suboxone after the expiration date. Do not keep leftover Suboxone. Dispose of any unused Suboxone as soon as you no longer need it. Just one dose of this medicine can cause death through accidental or improper use. Ask your pharmacist about a drug take-back disposal program for prescription drugs and controlled substances. If there is no drug take-back program available, remove any unused Suboxone films from the foil pack and flush them down the toilet. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
