Pros & Cons

What are the pros and cons of Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone)?

pros header.svg

  • Suboxone reduces drug cravings and withdrawal symptoms, thus making it easier for people dependent on opioid drugs to remain abstinent. It complements psychotherapy and other addiction treatments.
  • Along with buprenorphine, Suboxone also contains naloxone, which is a medicine that lowers the risk of opioid abuse. Naloxone prevents drug users from shooting or injecting opioid drugs because products that contain naloxone cause a rapid onset of withdrawal symptoms when used in this manner - patients know this and avoid doing it while on Suboxone treatment.
  • It is a long-acting medicine and needs to be taken only once a day.

  • Although Suboxone is less habit-forming and is a safer alternative to illegal opioids like heroin and prescription drugs (narcotic pain relievers), there is a risk of developing a dependence on Suboxone.
  • There is also a risk of misuse and crime. Some people with opioid dependence may trade their prescription Suboxone for street drugs (this is against the law).
  • Suboxone can only be prescribed by certain physicians who meet the qualifying criteria for controlled substance prescription drugs.
