How To Use Sulfamethoxazole Trimethoprim
Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim comes in the form of an oral tablet and liquid suspension to take by mouth. You usually need to take this medicine every 12 hours (twice a day). However, your doctor may prescribe it 4 times a day for serious infections. Try to take your medicine at the same time(s) every day. Shake the oral suspension well before use.
Read the prescription label carefully and take sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without consulting your healthcare provider.
You should start to feel better after taking sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim for a few days. However, you should finish all the medicine prescribed by your doctor. Stopping treatment too soon or skipping doses may result in incomplete treatment of your bacterial infection, causing it to come back and be harder to treat due to antimicrobial resistance.
Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse after starting antibiotic therapy.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
