How To Use Sumatriptan Succinate (Imitrex)
Sumatriptan comes in the form of a tablet, nasal spray, injection syringe, or auto-injector for treating headaches. Your doctor may give you the first dose of sumatriptan in their office and monitor you for serious side effects. The tablet should be taken by mouth as a single dose as soon as you feel a migraine attack starting. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to show you how to correctly use the nasal spray or auto-injector.
Follow the dosing instructions on your prescription label carefully, and take sumatriptan exactly as prescribed. Do not take a higher or lower dose or take it more or less frequently than advised by your doctor.
Call your doctor if you do not get relief from migraine attacks after taking sumatriptan. Do not increase the dose or frequency of this medicine without your doctor’s approval. Taking sumatriptan or other headache medicines on more than 10 days in a month can lead to medication overuse headache. Record your headache frequency, headache severity, and sumatriptan administration. Tell your doctor if you need to use sumatriptan more than 4 times a month to treat migraine headaches.
Sumatriptan may help to relieve symptoms of migraine headache, but it will not prevent migraine attacks or lower their frequency.
Missed dose: Sumatriptan is usually taken on an as needed basis. Take the medicine at the first sign of a migraine headache. You can take a second dose after 2 hours or more if your symptoms come back. Do not take a second dose if you don’t get any improvement in your headache pain. Do not take more than 200 mg in 24 hours.
Storage: Store sumatriptan at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused sumatriptan should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw sumatriptan in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded sumatriptan is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
