How should I take Synthroid (levothyroxine)?

Synthroid comes in the form of tablets and capsules to be taken by mouth. This medicine is usually taken once a day in the morning on an empty stomach, 30-60 minutes before breakfast. Take the tablet with a full glass of water to avoid gagging or choking. Swallow the capsules whole - do not chew or crush them. 

If you are giving Synthroid to an infant, child, or adult who cannot swallow tablets, you can crush and mix the tablet in 1-2 teaspoons (5 to 10 mL) of water. Do not mix the crushed tablets with anything other than water, especially not soybean infant formula or other foods. Instead, give the crushed tablet mixed in water by dropper or spoon straight away (do not store for later use).

 Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct Synthroid dosage and frequency. Do not take more or less Synthroid or take it more or less frequently than prescribed. 

Do not stop taking Synthroid without talking to your healthcare professional first. Synthroid controls hypothyroidism but does not cure it. It can take several weeks for you to notice an improvement in your symptoms. Do not stop taking Synthroid even if you feel well. 

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Synthroid, take your medication as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Synthroid at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep Synthroid and other drugs out of reach of children and pets.

 Unused medicine: Throw away any unneeded or expired Synthroid. Do not flush the medication down the toilet. The best way to dispose of Synthroid is through a medicine take-back program for prescription drugs. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
