Synthroid (levothyroxine) tips from pharmacists

  • Synthroid is intended to replace a hormone that is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Generally, replacement therapy with Synthroid is to be taken for life, except in some cases of transient hypothyroidism caused by an inflammation of the thyroid gland.
  • If you experience side effects from Synthroid, talk to your healthcare provider. This might be because your dose is too high, and they may lower your dose.
  • Unlike most other medications, the generic forms of Synthroid (levothyroxine) from different manufacturers are not the same. Try to fill your levothyroxine prescription at the same pharmacy and pay attention to the manufacturer. If you change the manufacturer, your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
  • Synthroid will control your hypothyroidism but will not cure it. Continue taking your medication even if you feel well. If you want to come off the medicine, talk to your doctor first. They may reduce the dose gradually.
