How To Use Telmisartan (Micardis)

Telmisartan comes as a tablet to take by mouth. You can take this medicine with or without food. Take your medicine at around the same time every day. This will help you remember to take it.

The tablets are packaged in an individual blister pack. Do not remove the tablet from the foil until you are ready to take it. 

Read the prescription label carefully and take telmisartan exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your doctor’s approval.

Your doctor may start you on a low dose of telmisartan and gradually increase the dose. This medication will help to control hypertension (high blood pressure), but it will not cure the condition. Your blood pressure may improve during the first 2 weeks of taking telmisartan, but the maximum blood pressure reduction will occur after 4 weeks. Do not stop taking telmisartan without talking to your doctor, even if you feel well and your blood pressure readings at home are in the normal range.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of telmisartan, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused telmisartan should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw telmisartan in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
