How To Use Terbinafine

Terbinafine tablets are taken once a day with food for 6 or 12 weeks to treat fingernail and toenail infections, respectively. 

Terbinafine granules are mixed with soft food and taken for 6 weeks to treat fungal infections of the scalp (tinea capitis). You can mix the terbinafine granules with one spoonful of soft food such as mashed potatoes (do not use a fruit-based food like applesauce). The entire contents of the packet should be mixed with soft food and swallowed without chewing.

Read the prescription label and patient information carefully. Do not adjust the dose, dosage frequency, or the duration of treatment without your doctor’s approval.

Do not be alarmed if your fungal infection does not clear for a few months after you finish taking terbinafine. This is expected because it takes time for healthy nails to grow back. 

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of terbinafine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store terbinafine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused terbinafine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw terbinafine in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
