How To Use Terconazole

Terconazole vaginal cream and vaginal suppository should be inserted into the vagina daily at bedtime for 3 or 7 days.

Read the prescription label, patient information leaflet, and package instructions carefully. Use terconazole exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not change the dose, dosage frequency, or treatment duration without asking your doctor.

This medicine is for external use only. Do not swallow it. Avoid getting it near your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Here are step-by-step usage instructions for terconazole vaginal cream and terconazole suppositories:

  • Fill terconazole vaginal cream to the level indicated on the special vaginal applicator. If you are using terconazole suppositories, unwrap a suppository and wet it with lukewarm water. You can use either the applicator or your finger to insert the suppository.
  • Lie on your back with your knees drawn up toward your chest and legs spread apart.
  • Insert the applicator high into your vagina and slowly press the plunger to release the medicine. Do not force the applicator if you encounter resistance - tell your doctor if this is the case.
  • Gently remove the applicator and clean it with soap and water each time you use it.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water.

You should apply terconazole before bedtime when you’re ready to go to bed. Do not get out of bed after applying terconazole so that the drug can work. You can wear an absorbent panty liner to prevent staining your clothes.

Continue using terconazole if you get your menstrual period. Use unscented sanitary napkins during your period. Do not wear a tampon as it can absorb some of the medicine and prevent it from working properly.

Continue using terconazole for the full prescribed course of treatment even if you start feeling better. Do not stop terconazole therapy without your doctor’s advice.

Avoid sexual intercourse until the infection has cleared. An ingredient in terconazole vaginal cream can make latex products like condoms, diaphragms, and cervical caps less effective. Do not use these products during terconazole treatment and for 72 hours afterward. If your sexual partner experiences symptoms such as redness, itching, or discomfort in their genital area, tell them you are being treated and that they should consult a physician.

You should take the following precautions to lower your risk of yeast infections in the vagina:

  • Do not douche unless advised to do so by your doctor. Douching can upset the normal bacterial balance and pH of the vagina.
  • Keep your genital area clean and dry. Dry thoroughly after showering, bathing, and swimming. Do not stay in a wet bathing suit or damp exercise clothes longer than necessary. A wet environment in the vagina encourages the growth of yeast.
  • Wipe from front to back after bowel movements.
  • Wear cotton underwear. Avoid wearing tight jeans and pants and synthetic underwear or pantyhose.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of terconazole, insert the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not insert a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store terconazole at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused and expired terconazole should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to it. Do not throw terconazole in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded terconazole is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company.
