Tolterodine (Detrol LA) Uses

Tolterodine is used to treat a condition called overactive bladder in which the muscles in the urinary bladder contract excessively, causing urinary frequency, urinary urgency, and inability to control urination (urge urinary incontinence or inability to get to the bathroom on time).

There may be other uses of tolterodine—your doctor or health system pharmacists can give you further drug information.

Tolterodine (Detrol LA) Mechanism of Action

Tolterodine belongs to a group of drugs called antimuscarinics that attach to muscarinic receptors. This relaxes the bladder muscle and prevents it from contracting.

Tolterodine (Detrol LA) Doses

Tolterodine comes as a 1-mg and 2-mg immediate-release tablet and a 2-mg and 4-mg extended-release capsule.

The usual dose levels of tolterodine IR (immediate-release) tablets are 2 mg twice a day (total daily dose 4 mg). Your healthcare provider may recommend a dose reduction to 1 mg twice a day based on the therapeutic effect.

The usual starting dose of the extended-release capsules of tolterodine (Detrol LA) is 4 mg once daily by mouth, taken with water. Your doctor may recommend a dose reduction to 2 mg once daily based on response to tolterodine therapy and tolerability (adverse events).
