How To Use Topiramate
Topiramate comes in the form of tablets, sprinkle capsules, extended-release capsules, and an oral solution. The extended-release capsules are taken once a day. The other dosage forms are taken once or twice a day. You can take this medicine with or without food. Try to take your medicine at around the same time(s) every day.
Read the prescription label and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions carefully. Your doctor will start you on a lower dose of topiramate, perform dose adjustments every 1-2 weeks, and gradually increase you to a maintenance dose. Do not change the dose or dosage frequency without talking to your doctor.
Swallow the oral tablet whole (the tablets have a bitter taste and lose their effectiveness if they have been broken for some time).
You can swallow the sprinkle capsules and extended-release capsules (Qudexy XR) whole, or you can sprinkle their contents over a little bit of soft food like applesauce. Do not cut or chew the capsules. Swallow the medicine and applesauce mixture immediately (do not store for later use). Drink some water afterward to ensure you swallow all of the medicine.
Use a dose-measuring device to measure the dose of topiramate oral solution. Do not use a kitchen spoon, as this can result in wrong dosing.
Topiramate will help to control your condition but will not cure it. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, even if your seizures or migraine headaches are well controlled. Call your doctor if you notice any changes in behavior or mood, but continue taking the medicine. Stopping topiramate abruptly can result in worsening seizures. Your doctor will tell you how to slowly reduce the dose of topiramate and switch you to another antiepileptic medication if needed.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of topiramate, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take more than one dose (a double dose) to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store topiramate tablets, extended-release capsules, and solution at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in the original container, tightly closed. Store the sprinkle capsules at or below 25° C or 77° F. Discard any unused solution 60 days after opening the bottle. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused topiramate should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw topiramate in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded topiramate is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
