How To Use Tramadol

Tramadol comes in the form of a tablet, solution, or extended release (long-acting) tablet or capsule. This medicine should be taken by mouth with water, with or without food. The short acting tablet or solution is usually taken every 4-6 hours as needed. The extended release tablet or capsule is usually taken once a day.

If you are taking tramadol extended release tablet or capsule to relieve pain (Ultram ER), do not crush, chew, break, or dissolve the tablet or capsule. Take your medicine at around the same time every day. You can take tramadol ER with or without food, but you should either always take it with food or always without food.

If you are taking tramadol oral solution, use a dose measuring device such as an oral syringe to measure the dose accurately. Do not use a household spoon to measure your tramadol liquid dose.

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Do not take more or less tramadol or take it more or less frequently than prescribed.

Your doctor may start you on a lower dose of tramadol and gradually increase the dose. If you want to come off this medicine, your doctor may ask you to reduce the dose gradually. Do not stop taking tramadol without talking to your doctor first. If you abruptly stop taking tramadol, it can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as panic, anxiety, nervousness, sweating, sleep problems, sneezing, runny nose, cough, increased pain, chills, nausea, diarrhea, shakiness, and hallucinations.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of tramadol, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not take two doses of tramadol to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store tramadol at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused tramadol. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
