Trospium Uses
Trospium is used to treat overactive bladder, a condition in which the muscles of the urinary bladder contract excessively, causing urinary frequency (frequent bathroom visits), urinary urgency (not getting to the bathroom on time), and urge urinary incontinence (wetting accidents due to inability to control urination).
There may be other uses of trospium—your doctor or health system pharmacists can give you further drug information.
Trospium Mechanism of Action
Trospium belongs to a group of medications called antimuscarinics. These drugs attach to muscarinic receptors in the bladder muscles. This helps to relax the bladder muscles and prevent them from contracting uncontrollably, thus relieving symptoms such as urgent urination, frequent urination, and uncontrolled urination.
Trospium Doses
Trospium chloride comes as a 20-mg immediate-release film-coated tablet and a 60-mg extended-release capsule.
The recommended dose is trospium 20 mg tablet twice a day or 60 mg capsule once daily. The medicine should be taken on an empty stomach (at least one hour before a meal). The dose may need to be adjusted for older adults and people with kidney disease.
